Michael Stewart is a professional photographer with more than 30 years of experience. His photography studio is in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington DC. His team creates digital photography for commercial clients in Northern Virginia and across the country.

Technical skill and a sharp eye for creating artistic work are the bases of his photography studio’s success. Michael’s industrious nature and pioneering spirit has allowed him to achieve a place at the vanguard of professional photography & visual creation. He not only shoots assignments; he consults for numerous studios and galleries.

Photographer’s Experience

    • Professional Photography
      Stewart Photographic: January 1989-Present
      Stewart Photographic was officially established as a business in 1989.  Michael had already been shooting seriously for school yearbooks, local papers and even sold an image as a magazine cover. His interest in photography began at age 12 when he received a SLR camera as a gift.
    • Photography Book Technical Editor
      O’Reilly Media: May 2004 – April 2009 (5 years)
      Michael worked with author, Peter Krogh, to develop theories on digital asset management and presented them in two groundbreaking books: The DAM Book and The DAM Book 2.0.

    • Project Manager
      UPDIG (Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines): Sept 2006 – Sept 2008 (2 years)
      Michael managed a high profile project funded by a Library of Congress grant and supported by all the major imaging associations at the time. He edited the material for technical corectness, structured the information architecture, and managed web as well as print design.
    • Chapter President
      ASMP-DC (American Society of Picture Professionals) January 1999 – January 2003 (4 years)
      Michael served on the ASMP-DC Board of Directors for four years, including one as President and one as Co-President. He helped produce 10 educational and inspirational photography programs for professional photographers each year. Topics included: the photography business, digital imaging and marketing for photographers.
    • Photography Professor
      Shepherd University, Northern VA Community College: September 1996 – September 2000 (4 years)
      Michael taught: Studio Lighting, Digital Image Capture and Business of Photography. He developed curriculum for a Photography Bachelor’s program. He also ran the schools E-6 film lab while providing hardware and software support for the digital imaging lab.
    • Photography Studio Manager
      David Sharpe Studio: 1991 – 1994 (3 years)
      Michael provided support to four photographers at a large and busy commercial photography studio. He worked on catalogs, fashion, cars, jewelry, lifestyle, and editorial photography projects. He also maintained photography equipment, an e-6 film lab, and a B&W darkroom. He later became an associate and started shooting photography assignments in the studio and on location. see it

      Conceptual Photographic Services 1988 – 1991 (3 years)
      Michael worked with the best and brightest photographers around the country for advertisement and editorial stories in magazines such as: Architectural Digest, USA today, Better Homes and Gardens, The Washington Post, GQ, Men’s Health, Business Week, National Geographic, Southern Living, Time, Food and Wine, and Discover.
  • Photography Education
    NVCC 1997 Associates in Applied Science with a major in Commercial Photography and a specialization in Studio Photography.Michael’s true education comes from attending numerous imaging workshops and collaborating with expert colleagues. His favorite events are: Photoshop World and PhotoPlus
